The iPhone-14 could have the biggest changes in years, including a possible end to the notch.
While we’ve only recently finished our work, rumors about the iPhone 14 are already running rampant. The iPhone 13 review has come out with the iPhone 13 Pro.
However, while the new iPhone 13 is only a relatively iterative upgrade over previous generations of iPhones, the iPhone 14 is likely to change more in this regard. In fact, it was Jon Prosser, an Apple informant majoring in the iPhone 14 who broke the news suggesting a major iPhone redesign in 2022; Prosser’s track record on leak accuracy is mixed, so take this with a grain of salt Attitude.

Rumors so far point to a notch, under-display Touch ID, a new 4nm processor and a possible port design for one model. Also, the iPhone mini may disappear in favor of new sizes. We also have our pick of 7 major upgrades we’d like to see from the iPhone 14.
With that in mind, here’s what we know about the iPhone 14 so far, and what we expect to see from Apple’s 2022 smartphone.
iPhone 14 possible release date and price
We’ve heard about a potential release date for the iPhone 14. But through previous Apple iPhone launch events, we’d expect to see the iPhone 14 begin debuting in September 2022.
As for prices, forecasting is also difficult. But we suspect the iPhone 14 will match the price of the iPhone 13, which is $799 for the iPhone 13 Mini and $899 for the iPhone 13 Pro. However, there may not be an iPhone 14 mini, so we expect the standard iPhone 14 to start at $899.
Don’t have an iPhone 14 mini?
Despite reports of poor iPhone 12 mini sales, Apple has revealed the iPhone 13 mini. But the mini could be the toast later, as the company will report shaking the iPhone 14 lineup in 2022. There could be a larger iPhone 14 Plus or Max that can go with the regular 6.1-inch iPhone 14. So there are also two regular-sized phones and two larger phone screen iPhone 14 models.
This was further confirmed by Prosser, who claimed in a recent video that the iPhone 14 Max will be a replacement for the mini phone. It only offers a 6.7-inch display and doesn’t come with a lot of professional features, so it’s expensive. Given the demand for bigger phones, a bigger, cheaper iPhone might be just what iPhone fans are looking for.
iPhone 14 Designs
According to Jon Prosser and his Front Page Tech video, the iPhone 14 looks like a cross between the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 4 because it has flat edges. But on those edges, there may be a mute button and a set of circular volume center buttons reminiscent of the iPhone 4.
It has been speculated that the sides of the iPhone14 could be made of titanium, which could make it stronger than previous iPhones, while the back will retain the glass finish but look like a satin finish. Speaking of the edge, there are rumors that the next iPhone will be portless but Prosser claims that the iPhone 14 will continue to use the Lightning port.
One of the most significant changes to the iPhone14 over its predecessors is the return of the slanted Touch ID. It’s just that it won’t be integrated into a power button, it should be integrated into the power button embedded under the iPhone 14’s display, as many of the best Android phones with fingerprint sensors. Face ID has a hard time identifying iPhone users at a time when people are wearing masks to avoid catching Covid-19, so having a form of Touch ID will solve that problem. Another possible design change in the cards for the iPhone 14 is that the rear camera trio will no longer protrude from the rear of the iPhone, but will be flush with the back. Providing the best features in-camera sensor technology and lens manufacturing, this could be a possibility.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also commented on the iPhone 14 leak, claiming that the next Apple phone will have a “completely redesigned” setup, not too far from the iPhone 13. According to Gurman, that’s because “Apple’s engineers are working on bigger things behind the scenes, which take more time,” so we’ll see more significant changes in the iPhone 14 than in the iPhone 13. The most notable change will be the eventual removal of the display notch that has been around since the iPhone X; more on that later.
iPhone-14 display
We expect big changes in the iPhone-14 range, as we’ll see the standard iPhone-14 and iPhone-14 Pro with 6.1-inch displays, while the iPhone-14 Plus and iPhone-14 Pro Max will likely feature 6.7-inch displays. So no more 5.4-inch minis.
Given that the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro max have a 120Hz refresh rate, we’d expect all iPhone-14 models to have such screens, likely using LTPO. However, a copy from Heater says that at least one iPhone-14 has an LTPS display, which means a 60Hz panel might stay nearby.
The consistent display seems to fit the iPhone-14 logic of the iPhone 13 to the iPhone-14, but it never translates to the latest iPhone.
But the most important change in the iPhone-14 is the removal of the display notch. Prosser’s leak-based renders effectively claim that the notch will be replaced by a punch-hole front-facing camera. It’s easy to imagine since many Android phones use the same method to free up screen space.
However, this raises the question of where the Face ID sensor will go. There are rumors that Apple will put sensors under the OLED display, but display experts claim that Ross Young has said “under-panel Face ID is not final, but ‘it’s easier than a panel camera’. There’s some chatter that if Apple does use Face ID for the show, it will remain with the iPhone-14 Pro models.
How Apple would go with a punch-hole camera while still using Face ID without an under-display sensor is still up for debate. Maybe the top edge of the iPhone-14 could be a little larger to accommodate the sensor or use advanced image processing with the selfie camera to avoid infrared scanning. Either way, we’d very much like the current display notch to go down in Apple’s design history, since it’s already pretty bulky by modern smartphone standards.
iPhone-14 camera
We haven’t heard much about the iPhone-14’s camera so far, but there are some interesting rumors. A report by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested the iPhone-14’s main sensor capacity would be 48MP for the Pro model, which would be a big jump from the 12MP camera on the iPhone 13.
best telephoto capabilities would also be appreciated, as the iPhone lags behind the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S21. . In fact, it would be pretty awesome if Apple took inspiration from the Galaxy S21 Ultra and opted for a secondary telephoto camera with something like 10x optical zoom.
An Apple patent points to Apple working on a periscope-style zoom camera that could make its way to the iPhone-14, or at least the Pro models.
iPhone-14 specs, battery life and charging
So far, we’ve only got a few tidbits about the iPhone-14’s specs. We’re fairly confident that the 2022 iPhones will use Apple-designed A-series chips. Most likely the A16, is a chip that will almost certainly offer a significant boost in processor and graphics performance compared to the iPhone 13’s A15 Bionic.
The iPhone-14 will be powered by a 4nm chip which will be smaller and more efficient than the 5nm A15 Bionic prepared for the iPhone 13.
It’s also possible that the iPhone-14 will feature an Apple-Make 5G modem after Apple acquired Intel’s modem business. That could give Apple more control over 5G performance and battery life.
iPhone-14: What we want to see
A fresh new design: Prosser’s iPhone-14 renders a rather attractive phone. But it’s not a huge jump in Apple’s industrial design aesthetic. At a guess, Apple makes some of the most beautiful phones, but we wanted to see if it could push phone design even further; maybe the iPhone-14 range could include a rough iPhone flip foldable phone.
No ratings: The iPhone-14 can bring smaller displays, and we hope they put up with the fruit. Rumors have it that it could be replaced with a punch hole, but we’d love to see an in-display camera as long as it doesn’t affect imaging or Face ID performance.
Touch ID: We’re pretty confident that Apple will re-enable Touch ID on the iPhone-14, even if it’s not through the display sensor. Maybe the side-mounted power button could integrate a Touch ID sensor, like in the iPad Air.
Smarter features: While Apple A-series chips have always been Powerhouses, we’d like to see Apple leaning more toward the AI side of things, like the Google Pixel 6. Is it going to be a tensor chip? That way, we could have a smarter, more responsive Siri to compete with Google Assistant, as well as smarter features that more intuitively give iPhone-14 users the data or services they want.
The killer camera features: The iPhone 12 Pro Max offers one of the best camera phones around but we’d like to see Apple push its camera technology and hardware further. For now, the Pro Max and similar Google Pixel 5. and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra are not huge. With the iPhone-14, we’d like to see Apple deliver a camera and phone photography experience that wipes the floor of Android competitors, forcing them to shoot their photography game with their next phone. And getting ahead of Zoom would help.
